Juno is a Belgian Malinois who was adopted by the family of Lucas Hembree, a four year old with Sanfilippo syndrome, which is an untreatable and ultimately fatal disease.

The Hembrees rescued Juno days before she was slated to be euthanized. The previous owners had given her up because they didn't understand the drive and activity of the breed. But Chester Hembree, Lucas' dad, did.

“I used to help with the training of police K-9s, and our dogs were Belgian Malinoises,” he says. “I loved their desire to work and their ‘never quit’ attitude.” In addition to being a popular choice for police dogs, the breed is often used in combat. In fact, it’s believed that the dog that helped Navy SEALs take down Osama bin Laden was a Belgian Malinois.

After introducing Juno to Lucas, the two have been inseparable.

“I wanted to make sure she had plenty of time to adjust to the family before I started the formal training,” Chester says. Yet, from the beginning there seemed to be something instinctive about their relationship. One day, Chester noticed Juno circling Lucas while he was in his wheelchair. “She was whining and nudging him with her nose,” Chester says. “I checked his oxygen levels and they were very low.” After giving him oxygen, Lucas returned to normal and Juno greeted him with licks and affection.

“That’s when I knew she had the ability to pick up on his neurological changes,” Chester says. “Now she alerts us when Lucas is about to have a seizure or if his oxygen levels drop really low. She has saved him several times."

What Tebow dissenters are really afraid of

Jacob Moffitt is a senior English major in Wichita and has written one of the most honest reasons we've seen someone give, at least in print, on why they don't like Tebow. And it's fair.

The reason I and many others may dislike Tebow so much is because he seems to have such a better life than we do, and he seems to clearly be a much better person then me. He is highly successful, rich, famous, in shape, has great sportsmanship, and he even has The Tim Tebow Foundation—which helps “bring a brighter day to deserving children.”

I have trouble trusting Tebow because I don’t want him to be involved in some scandal that will disvalue all of his previous endeavors (not saying he will but it has happened many times in the past), thus, being caught in some hypocritical scandal, abusing his power like Ted Haggard or Jim Bakker. I want him to truly be what he claims to be.

I’m just afraid Tebow will let me down, and all of those who view him as such a unique and great human being. Don’t let us down Tebow. America needs you. I need you to prove me wrong. I need you to show me that people can be religious with money and fame and not mess up. Tebow if you continue to prove that you are legit in your beliefs, you might be able to renew my faith in people. Please don’t let me down Tebow, but if you could cut back on the constant prayers and kneeling on the field, that would be great.

Our challenge to all the Jacobs of the world that are afraid to put their trust in Tebow is to be the hero in their own lives, in their sphere of influence. No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. And instead of putting your trust in a football player to be a good influence, you be it instead.

Now that it is the off-season for Tebow and the Broncos, we'd like to reissue the challenge to make Tebow "irrelevent" again because it illustrates how important it is that we all become good leaders. We can't all rely on one guy to be a good role model. We are all role models, good or bad, because wherever we go, someone sees us and sees what we do and how we do it. Like it or not, we're all role models and we can all make a positive difference in the world, or not. It's our choice.

Below is our original challenge, and let's see how many new "heroes" emerge by the start of the 2012 football season. Make Tebow one of the many, instead of letting him be one of the few.

To all the Christians who read this blog, we'd like to issue you this challenge. Let's make Tebow irrelevant. Imagine that so many Christians actually lived a strong Christian life that someone like Tebow was so typical, so commonplace that it wouldn't warrant discussing, much less dissecting.

How about bringing the same passion, commitment, determination, hard work and excellence to our everyday lives that others are forced to consider our faith and our God as a result of our everyday actions?

How about taking the hits from the skeptics in our sphere of influence with the same polite, level headed and gracious approach that we see Tebow do, week after week, year after year?

Instead of "tebowing", i.e. taking a picture of yourself pretending to pray, how about really praying for those around you who are in need?

Instead of wearing a 15 jersey with "Jesus" emblazoned on the back, how about feeding the sick, supporting orphans, visiting prisoners, and providing health care to those less fortunate. How about acting like a follower of the real Jesus, instead of just wearing his name?

And instead of "believing" Tebow can get it done on the field, how about we all join him off the field and make being a real Christian the standard and not the exception?

Let Tebow silence his critics on the field, and let us as fans join forces and silence the critics off the field by making the man Tebow is just one of the many instead of one of the few.

Byron Donzis, inventor of the football flak jacket, dies at 79

It may not seem that significant to the average fan, but the football flak jacket revolutionized the game of football because it protected the QB and other players' ribs.

It's inventor, Byron Donzis, passed away last Sunday, January 15. He is well known for having snuck into Dan Pastorini's hospital room, the Houston Oiler QB with three busted ribs, in 1978 to demonstrate the flak by having someone hit him repeated with a baseball bat for the ailing QB. Days later Pastorini suited up with the flak jacket and led his team to the playoffs.

Mr. Donzis had no regrets about his unorthodox demonstration in the quarterback’s hospital room. “People will consider you off the wall. If that bothers you don’t be an innovator,” he told the Dallas Morning News in 1994. “That’s part of the badge you wear.”

NFL.com has an interesting mini film entitled "The Book of Tebow." It covers the Broncos' 2011 season and the extraordinary roller coaster ride Tebow led us all on this year. The interesting thing about it is that it showcases various players throughout the NFL who pray individually but also teams who say the Lord's Prayer together as a group. Look at how many do.

Once upon a time the image of a man kneeling in prayer was a sign of strength to be admired and emulated.

Maybe it is making a comeback.

Karina Smirnoff wants Tim Tebow to be on Dancing with the Stars for her birthday. "All I want for my birthday is for Tim Tebow to dance on Dancing with the Stars," she said Saturday... "Tim is a very talented athlete, that was clear when we saw his performance this past season with Denver."

But Erin Andrews, former Gator Dazzler and Dancing with the Stars alum, told GQ he can't dance. "Tim Tebow cannot dance, I know that. [laughs] Tebow can do a lot of things, but he can not dance."

But given the chance of being on Dancing with the Stars or American Idol, Tebow would take dancing.

Tebow injured in Patriots game

Various news outlets are reporting that Tebow suffered a serious injury in the Patriots game to his ribs and a bruised lung. The speculation now turns to if he will be able to play in the ProBowl as the second alternate, behind Brady and Roethlisberger, because of the injuries.

Also, Peter King has also helped raise speculation via twitter that Tebow should have sat out and let Brady Quinn go in. "RT @mikeztyme: So Tebow basically cost his team.. If you're injured, get out and let a healthy Quinn play ... 35-7 when he got popped, sir."

Tebow's response to playing injured during the Pat's game: "I just wanted to show character. You just continue to fight and it doesn't change who you are, how you play, how you go out there, you should be the same at all times," Tebow said. "That's what I wanted to show, it didn't matter if it was the first play or the last play or you were down by 42. I was going to be the same player and I was still going to give everything I have. Because that's all I have to give."

We're getting the feeling that it is going to be a very long off-season.

Billick wants Tebow to "slim down"

They had to reign him in from lifting too much in high school, and then in college, and now Coach Billick thinks Tebow should tone down the weight lifting too.

"I'm excited to see what happens with Tim Tebow in an entire offseason. He's gonna get a coach whisperer," said Billick, "to work on those mechanics.

"I think the No. 1 thing Tim Tebow has to do, I don't think he can lift the way he's lifted before. There's three people that can't lift the way Tim Tebow does: pro quarterbacks, pro tennis players and golfers."

Tebow packs 236 chiseled pounds onto his 6-3 frame.

"He has got to cut back on that rigid, thick (frame)," said Billick. "I know it keeps him alive as a running quarterback, but it does not bode well for his passing, the fluidity that he has to have. So that's, to me, job one in the offseason, he's got to change his (conditioning) mindset."

Sally Quinn, religion writer for the Washington Post, is a Tim Tebow fan. And like many, she is more of a fan of Tebow than of the player because she is not a fan of football.

I think Tim Tebow is the last person in the world to think that he can “work” God. He believes that God has given him the chance to do good and he is doing it the best way he can. And he is using all of his abilities to their fullest. Listen to what he had to say after the game.

“It still wasn’t a bad day,” he said. “It still was a good day, because I got to spend some time before the game with Zack McLeod (a 20 year old with a brain injury sustained from playing football) and made him smile, and overall, when you get to do that it’s still a positive day. Sometimes that’s hard to see, but it depends what lens you’re looking through. I choose to look through those lenses, and I got to make a kid’s day. That’s more important than winning the game so I’m proud of that.”

He should be.

And his God should be proud too.

Though the “God” in this “memoir” is satiric, he has an important message which Tebow learned long ago. It isn’t about him. It isn’t about praying to win. It isn’t about believing that praying to win will influence God. It’s about believing that praying to do good in the world can work. “God” cannot be worked. Neither can Tim Tebow.

For those of us who were fortunate to see Tim Tebow play at the Swamp we also got to see the Tebow victory lap after games. And what was the music playing as Tebow high-fived as many fans as possible? "Party Like a Rock Star." The juxtaposition of "Party Like a Rock Star" playing with a guy so humble, so earnest to give back to fans, so much so that he goes back to high five missed hands (watch end of the video below), is only now what the rest of the nation is getting to see.

After the win against the Steelers, Tebow took another victory lap to thank the fans. It's his way of giving back. And we are very glad to see it again, even if it may be corny. Hopefully Tebow is redefining what it is to "party like a rock star."

Even Presidential candidates want a Tebow endorsement.

Sensing the excitement and loving his message, Tebow is also being courted by Republican presidential candidates. The quarterback recently told The Associated Press he’s been asked by more than one of the contenders for his support. He wouldn’t name names, but did say he’d declined the offer.
“I think you have to have so much trust in who you support, just from product endorsements to endorsing a candidate because if that person or company does something (bad), it reflects on you,” said Tebow, who’s a pitchman for Nike, Jockey and FRS energy drink.

Bekah Watts is a blogger who struggles with insecurity, like the rest of us, and has been endeavoring to be more confident, or to be more like "an exclamation mark and not a question mark." Like many Christians and sports fans alike, she has found Tim Tebow's persistence and example to be an inspiration.

For the life of me, I can’t remember where I found/heard this quote, and every search I’ve tried in an effort to find it again has come up empty. But recently, in an article or interview or something related to having good posture, the interviewee said this,
“You should try to walk like an exclamation point, not a question mark.”

She was referring to not hunching over, as per the curved top of a question mark, but what she said is bound to stick with me for a long time. For me, she was speaking to an issue much deeper than standing up straight. She drove an arrow straight through my Achilles heel.
I do walk like a question mark. Because I think like a question mark.

Sometimes it’s inconsequential. As in,
“Did I just trip? Over air? Again?”
Yes. Yes you did.
But most of the time they’re more pointed questions. As in,
“Am I doing this right?”
“Do they like me?”
“Are my dreams unrealistic?”
“Am I good enough?”

Confidence is definitely not my strong point. There is nothing I’m more confident about than my lack of confidence. I don’t just question certain aspects of my existence, I generally feel as though I am altogether questionable. As a person of steadfast faith in God, with a laundry-list of scriptures that refute having a questionable worth, and a pile of tangible evidence to the contrary…one would assume this should be a non-issue.

And yet (and it’s a big AND YET…) it is. I’ve been plagued by crippling self-doubt for as long as I can remember. I’d give you examples ranging from elementary school to the present day but they all end in me being…wait for it…crippled by self-doubt, so they’re fairly anticlimactic. Suffice it to say: I’ve gone more than a few rounds with insecurity.

And I’ve prayed, OH LORD, I’ve prayed, that it would just be taken away and given a makeover. That in a half-hour TLC special my lack of confidence would be shampooed, blown dry, and transformed into radiant self esteem. But it doesn’t seem to work that way. At the the of the day I’m still completely unsure of myself, no matter how much I try to will or wish it away. [...]
I don’t think there is a better current example of this theory than Tim Tebow. By the media’s standards, he has no reason to be confident. Even by football standards, his confidence had to waver a bit after homeboy put up a completion percentage and total QBR in the twenties during the Broncos regular season finale. He had to have had some doubts about his abilities.
Didn’t he?

No one gave him even the slightest chance against the Steelers in last night’s wildcard game. It wouldn’t just have been easy, it would have been normal for him to think, “We backed into the playoffs. We’re playing the defending AFC Champions. We’ve been clobbered by three weeks of crucial injuries and crushing defeats. Maybe I can’t do this. What if it’s really impossible?”
He definitely could have gone that route. Been the question mark. And no one would have blamed him for it. But did he?

Well, HECK no! If this isn’t the personification of an exclamation point, then I’m not sure what is:

What did he have to say after the win?
“We just kept believing.“

Apparently so. And look at what has happened so far as a result! And who’s to say how much further they can go!

And how different would everything be if there was even the smallest margin left for question marks instead of exclamation points?

We’ve each been given a unique purpose. World famous professional athlete or unknown local blogger – the status makes no difference. Our job isn’t to doubt or question our purpose, but to get excited about it! I feel like I’ve been given something visual and something verbal. But I’ll never make a difference with those abilities if I continue to ask, “God, can you really use me?” instead of proclaiming, boldly, “God, you can really use me!”

If I ever decide to tattoo a verse to my forehead (and it’d be great if you all wouldn’t let me do that), this would be a good candidate:

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

"They had to hold him back in the weight room," Pouncey said with a smile. "He would just go in there and bench-press and do stupid stuff. He’s got to go in there and throw the ball on Saturdays."

CP: I understand you're a dedicated football fan and I recently saw a video of you encouraging Tim Tebow as he encounters public criticism. Why do you like him?
Cosby: I like what's happening in Denver. The beauty of what I see is that Tebow speaks his mind. When we look at the settling of this country we see a Bible in hand and God. Every Thanksgiving has God and the peacefulness of gratitude. It was important when the Twin Towers were hit and the sorrow with them that the first thing Congress did was sing "God Bless America."

There are thus people in the media and business who after an athlete does something will give them a bum rush. Mr. Tebow is someone who the media has picked on. ESPN found all sorts of athletes and experts to say this young man is not a good football player and that the other starting quarterback is better. They said his footwork is awful and that he is a freak or something that couldn't play at all. People are Tebowing, Tebowing and Tebowing but Tebow won't allow people to focus on what he has done and has not done. He just states the glory of being out there and the privilege of playing. He tells them how his team plays and succeeds and the way he does it is almost biblical.

There are stories in the Bible about people telling other people how to do things. When you hear this young man say "we don't give up," that's something human beings who win will tell you every time. Breaks will happen. When they happen, you keep the same mind about what you're doing. It's about we the people getting on with our lives and doing it that way.

Mark Kiszla begins his column today n in the Denver Post with this: "Maybe this is the miracle of Tim Tebow: The Broncos win, even when they lose, lose, lose." And that is how it must seem backing into the playoffs after a 7-3 loss.

And this is nothing new. Does anyone remember this oldie but goodie from the Spring of 2009?

The best line is, however, is "He cares for the poor and sick. He visits prisoners. He's Johnny Cash and Mother Teresa all rolled into one!!!"

The Broncos may have backed into the play offs, but look at it this way, it beats the alternative, and last year's 4-12 record.

“It’s not my job to see what people’s reasons are behind it,” Tebow said. “But I know, like a kid that tweeted me with cancer and said, “I’m Tebowing while I’m chemoing.” How cool is that? That’s worth it right there for that kid. If that gives him any encouragement or just puts a smile on his face or gives him encouragement to pray, then that’s really awesome and that’s completely worth it for me.”

Tebow said he supports the movement and hopes it encourages people to follow his lead.

Most of us have all seen the movie Chariots of Fire in which the Scottish runner and missionary Eric Liddell is memorialized for not running his best event, the 100m, in the 1924 Olympics because it fell on Sunday. He chose not to run on the Christian "sabbath" to honor God. Instead, he ran in the 400m which was not his strong race, but which he trained for, and it was thought impossible for him to win. It was said that an American trainer gave him a note previous to the race that said, "Those who honor me I will honor." (1 Samuel 2:30). He not only won, but set a world record which stood until the 1936 Berlin games.

The movie also popularized the statement "I believe God made me for a purpose. He also made me fast. And when I run, I feel his pleasure."

Eric Liddell's triumph is well known, and stands as a witness to his Christian faith and convictions, but what about his life after sports? Liddell was married and returned to China, where he was born, and he and his wife served as missionaries until his death in a Japanese internment camp in Weihsien, China in 1945. He was only 43.

Days before his death from an undiagnosed brain tumor and deprivation, Liddell asked that Finlandia be played for him.

Be still my soul the Lord is on thy side;

bear patiently the cross of grief and pain;

be still my soul...thy best,

thy heavenly Friend through thorny ways,

leads to a joyful end.

His final words were "it's full surrender."

A monument now stands in Weihsien commemorating his life and death.

Tim Tebow has helped popularize Phil 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." And most of us like this verse because we assume that it means that we can win, that we can be successful, and prosperous, because God will strengthen us to do so. But "all'' includes these as well:

Winning, succeeding, prospering
Struggling, persevering, just getting by
Losing, failing, grieving

Is God more honored through victories or how we act and cope with loss?

We've seen how an international debate has been sparked by Tim Tebow's public profession of faith, his unorthodox QB skills, and the Broncos' six-game winning streak that still seems "miraculous." What other public figure in American culture has stirred an international debate on the role of faith in daily or professional life, what God does and does not care about, or in what aspects is God willing to intervene in our lives?

Whatever this New Year brings, joy and success or heartache and struggle, let's all make it our goal to honor Him. Whatever talents you have, whatever your heart's desire, do your best and feel "his pleasure" like Liddell did.

Tebow and the Lessons of Hanukkah

Arnold M. Eisen, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, finds a corollary between the meanings of Hanukkah and the example Tebow has shown this season. Given Tebow's sideline prayer at the Bears game, we think Mr. Eisen will be pleasantly surprised.

This brings us to Mr. Tebow. Men and women who are grateful to God for daily miracles as well as extraordinary acts of salvation may subscribe to either of the stories of Hanukkah. They may believe, with the first story, that they "won" (whatever winning means in the context of their lives) thanks to their own efforts, backed up by God Who worked on their side. But they may also believe, with the second story, that because they won, they have the chance one more time, for at least one more day, to offer blessing to God. Like the rabbis, they want everything they do, great or small, to be an occasion for thanksgiving to their Creator.

If Tim Tebow is claiming, when he gets down on bended knee and points toward heaven, that God cares about Broncos victories on the football field, his theology frankly strikes me as absurd. I hope and believe that God has better things to worry about than football, even if God's attention span is infinite and therefore able to encompass a lot that lesser beings must leave aside while they are busy doing good. But if the quarterback is not thanking God for his touchdown passes, but rather testifying to the activity of God's strong right arm in the world and thanking God for his life and his gifts, Mr. Tebow is not all that different from the Rabbis who gave credit to "Mattathias, son of Yohanan" and his family of Maccabees for fighting against "cruel power," purifying the Temple, and "kindling lights in God's sacred courts."

Hanukkah means thanking God for help in doing that kind of work -- and summoning the courage to do the work, whether or not God's deliverance is at hand. That's the lesson behind the gifts, the latkes, the dreidels and the brisket. Darkness gives way when we light candles, one after another, week after week, year after challenging and wondrous year.
